Young people across Barnsley are already playing a huge part in shaping the plans for Base71. This Youth Zone is being built for them – and designed by them.
Young people are right at the centre of it all, helping to make key decisions to ensure Base71 reflects what they really want and need.
There’s nothing set in stone. Everything from the activities and facilities to the overall vibe of the place is influenced by local young people, making sure it’s relevant and exciting for Barnsley.
Our Young People’s Development Group (YPDG) has already been involved in creating the branding, developing ideas for the design, and even helping to choose the final name after a huge public vote, with over 3,000 young people having their say.
As we move forward, the YPDG will continue to consult with young people across the area, helping shape everything from the look and feel of the building to the staff we recruit.
Get Involved
Joining the Young People’s Development Group is a brilliant opportunity to get your voice heard, have your say on how Base71 will run, and be part of something big for Barnsley’s young people.
As a YPDG member, you’ll:
- Visit other open Youth Zones to gather inspiration
- Help with fundraising activities
- Get involved in recruiting and interviewing staff & volunteers
- Represent Base71 at community events
- Work on branding, interior design and creative projects
- Collect feedback from other young people to feed into plans
- Become a Youth Zone ambassador, spreading the word and getting others involved
The group meets regularly to bring ideas to life and make sure young people’s voices are heard at every stage.
