VOLUNTEER FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do I become a volunteer?
If you’d like to register your interest, please email volunteering@base71yz.org
Please note we are currently not accepting new volunteer applications.
Do I need any particular skills to volunteer?
For the majority of roles, enthusiasm and a passion for supporting young people is all we ask for! Some roles may need specific skills or qualifications, which will be clearly set out in the role descriptions.
I've never worked with young people before – can I still apply?
Absolutely! Experience is helpful but not essential – we’ll support you every step of the way, so this could be a great first step into youth work.
How much time do I need to give?
As a volunteer, you will not be contracted to any specific time commitment. That being said, each role description includes a suggested time commitment that we hope you’ll be able to fit into your week. Weekly sessions are held in the evenings, unless otherwise stated in the role description. There is always flexibility around the suggested time commitment, so please have a chat with us if you’re not able to offer the full amount.
How old do I need to be to volunteer?
Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.
Can I volunteer if I'm not a British citizen?
In most cases, yes – but you’ll need to check your visa conditions to ensure you’re allowed to volunteer in the UK
Will volunteering affect my benefits?
Usually, volunteering doesn’t impact benefits, but for the latest guidance, we recommend checking the NCVO website: NCVO – Volunteering and Benefits
Will I need to attend an interview?
Most roles will involve an informal interview with our Volunteer and Training Co-ordinator , which takes around 45 minutes. It’s a chance for us to get to know you – and for you to ask us anything, too
What support will I get as a volunteer?
You’ll have a dedicated point of contact at Base71, plus training, ongoing support, and regular feedback to help you get the most out of your experience. We’ll make sure you feel valued and supported every step of the way.
Will my expenses be covered?
Yes, we’ll reimburse any reasonable expenses linked to your volunteering – all in line with our expenses policy, which we’ll explain during your induction.
Can I volunteer if I have a criminal record?
All volunteer roles require an Enhanced DBS check. A previous conviction doesn’t automatically rule you out – we’ll look at each case individually and assess its relevance to the role you’ve applied for. If you have any unspent convictions, we’ll ask you to provide details confidentially.
have a disability – can I still volunteer?
Absolutely. We are committed to being inclusive and will work with you to make any reasonable adjustments needed. Please let us know how we can support you when you apply.
Can I volunteer if my child is a member?
In most cases, yes, though we’ll review it on a case-by-case basis to make sure it works well for both you and your child.
