We’re incredibly proud to share that Base71 has won the Sustainability and Social Impact Award at the Yorkshire Property Awards 2026.
The Yorkshire Property Awards celebrate excellence across the region’s property and construction sector, recognising projects that create exceptional outcomes for people, places and communities.
For Base71, this award recognises far more than the development of a new building. It celebrates the vision, collaboration and investment that created a place dedicated to Barnsley’s young people.
A building designed around young people
Base71 was created to give young people somewhere safe, welcoming and inspiring to spend their free time.
Our purpose-built Youth Zone welcomes young people aged 8–19, and up to 25 for those with additional needs. With more than 20 activities available during each session, members can explore everything from sport, climbing and fitness to art, music, cooking, dance and multimedia.
However, Base71 is about much more than the activities on offer. It is a place where young people can form positive relationships, build their confidence, develop new skills and access support from trusted youth workers.
With almost 5,000 active members already engaging with Base71, we are beginning to see the difference this investment is making across Barnsley.

Mandy Carlson, CEO of Base71 Youth Zone, said:
“We’re delighted that Base71 has received this award. Our building was designed with young people at its heart, creating a place they want to be and a space where life-changing youth work can happen every day.
“With almost 5,000 active members already engaging in activities that build confidence, resilience and aspiration, we are seeing the difference Base71 can make. This award is recognition of the vision, partnership and investment that brought Base71 to life and, most importantly, of Barnsley’s young people and their potential.”

Base71 was brought to life through collaboration between Barnsley Council, OnSide Youth Zones and a wide range of project partners.
We’re proud to share this recognition with Triton Construction, HB Architects, Walker Sime, Ramboll, ARC Engineers, TACE, JFQube, BWB, SK Transport, EDGE, Trevor Bridge Associates and ECUS. The Sustainability and Social Impact Award was sponsored by Ridge.
We would also like to thank every member of Team Base71 and, most importantly, the young people who fill our building with energy, creativity and possibility every day.
This award is an incredible recognition of how far Base71 has already come, and we’re only just getting started!
